The Newport Daily News provides this schedule of Memorial Day Events:
- Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Gilbert-Burton Post 4487, will host a small memorial service on Monday, May 28, at 10 a.m., outside of Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road. All VFW Post 4487 members and Ladies Auxiliary are encouraged to attend. All are welcome.
- Veterans of Foreign Wars Conover-Leary Post 406 will host the annual strewing of flowers on the water in memory of members of the Armed Forces who have perished at sea. The ceremony will be held on Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m., at Storer Park, at the intersection of Washington Street and the Goat Island Causeway, Newport.
- The United Veterans Council of Newport County and The American Legion, Newport Post No. 7 will host a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28, at noon, in front of Newport City Hall. As in past years, the Newport Artillery Co., the Rogers High School Army Junior ROTC, veterans’ organizations of Newport County, clergy, city and legislative officials as well as local area townspeople will participate and attend. The guest speaker will be Captain Russell Knight, USN, Deputy/Chief of Staff, Naval War College. United Veterans Council of Newport County President Fred Mathews and American Legion, Newport Post No. 7 Commander Matthew J Davis invites everyone to attend. A container will be available at the ceremony for the deposit of worn/faded/unserviceable U.S. flags. These flags will be retired and properly disposed of at an appropriate flag retirement ceremony to be held at a later date. For more information, call 808-9989.
- The Miantonomi Park tower, in Newport, will be open on Monday May 28, from 1:30–3:30 p.m. in observance of Memorial Day. This event recognizes the historical significance of the tower as a memorial to the Veterans of World War I. Completed in 1929, the 100-foot stone tower was designed by William Kendall of the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. The city has recently completed the first of restoration to the tower funded through a RIDEM Passive and Historic Park grant. Adults and families are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. The interior stone steps, lead to a narrow metal staircase that ascends to the top observation deck. Located on the highest point in Newport, views of Providence and Block Island are common on clear days. For more information, call 845-5802.
- Post Commander Comrade Harry J. Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Alvaro E. Vieira Post 5390, 822 Anthony Road, Portsmouth, invites all its members and friends to attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 28, at 10 a.m., at the Post Home. Service will include a flag ceremony by Cub Scout Pack 50 and a reading of all deceased members of Post 5390. Also, the winner of the Post 5390 Voice of Democracy competition will read her winning essay. For more information, call 683-2546.
- Tiverton Garden Club will place a Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker near the Doughboy Monument at Grinnell’s Beach in Tiverton, on Monday, May 28, at 1 p.m. The club members invite all veterans, family members of those presently serving, and anyone wishing to honor those who serve in the Armed Forces and dedicate their lives to protect our many freedoms. The Blue Star Memorial marker is part of National Garden Clubs, Inc. program started in 1945, honoring men and women who served in the armed forces during WWII. The blue star name was chosen from the WWII blue star service flags displayed in the windows of homes and businesses denoting family members’ service. The Blue Star Memorial program grew to recognize all men and women who have served, are serving, or will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.
- The Tiverton Recreation Commission will open Grinnell’s and Fogland Beaches, in Tiverton, during Memorial Day Weekend, and every weekend until June 18 when the beaches will be open until Labor Day (weather permitting). Admission for non-residents is $5 on weekdays, and $10 on weekends. Season passes for non-residents cost $75 and may be purchased at both gatehouses. Trailer admission is $15. Tiverton residents with proper identification (license or car registration) may obtain a season pass for free. For more information, call 625-6780.
